Sandton City Shopping Centre is expanding and improving to enhance its leading position as the world-class, unrivalled shopping and rendezvous destination for millions of local and international visitors. This expansion and refurbishment project will bring you a refreshed interior as well as many more leading global and South African retail brands.
Right now
January 2009 marked the start of phase 1 of a redevelopment programme that will see Sandton City strengthen its position as the leading mixed-use retail destination on the African continent. A complete internal refurbishment programme is creating a refreshed, contemporary environment throughout the existing mall. A new 30 000m2 of additional retail space is also currently under development. This will take the complex, which incorporates three existing office towers and hotel to a massive 215 000m2.
A primary focus for the refurbishment and extension program is to promote shopper flow through the centre while at the same time meeting the requirements of retailers for additional retail space. The extension will convert the centre from its traditional “L” shape to a continuous loop which will enhance the shoppers experience by encouraging and promoting the time honoured art of shopping for pleasure.
Phase 1: A platform for big brands
Coming soon is an impressive new Entrance 12 facing onto Rivonia Road. This is within easy walking distance of the new Gautrain station and the area will include a Piazza – perfect for those who enjoy the atmosphere of bustling street cafes.
The new extension clearly defines two distinct levels of shopping. The upper level lends an aspirational flavour with well-known international and local brands whilst the lower level appeals to the young, hip, tech-savvy individual. The expansion also gives existing retailers the opportunity to open new, larger flagship stores.
On completion of this ambitious rejuvenation programme, Sandton City will hold its own as a world-class retail environment, standing alone in the South African retail landscape.

Bigger
Sandton City’s spectacular expansion will provide an additional 30 000m2 of retail space (larger than the Sandton Convention Centre), giving you more variety from the best that local and international brands have to offer.
Brighter
Fresh, new finishes and a vibrant, sophisticated interior design theme that is warm with the undertones of a beautiful, rich and diverse Africa - will blend and flow throughout the shopping centre. The existing courts will also be given magnificent makeovers to complement the new interior. Each court will take on a different natural theme which will
resonate the warmth and splendor of our continent. Improved lighting will lift and light up the new features, fittings and floor work and state of the art public facilitates will enhance every shoppers experience.
Better
Shoppers can also look forward to a new link that will connect the new extension with the areas between Woolworths and Edgars, this new full-circle route will encompass the centre and optimise shopper flow.
An ambitious future
The ultimate long-term vision for the Sandton City complex is an emergence of a truly integrated, distinctive development where people aspire to work, live shop and play.
This outlook for future phases includes the construction of a new office tower of approximately 65 storeys on the existing complex footprint, as well as a significant residential component, and an outdoor dining and socialising experience to further enhance the Sandton City mixed use offering. The re-alignment of the mall connecting the Southern Sun Hotel to the centre is yet another part of the future concept of this project.
Merging seamlessly with its surroundings, the Sandton City complex will offer the ultimate round-the-clock lifestyle environment. The vision is about transformation, inspired at international level and creating a legacy for tomorrow.
