Although the centre is known for representing fashion and elegance, Sandton City also strives to assist those in need in the surrounding communities. In order to do this, one of Sandton City’s main objectives is to undertake a meaningful corporate social responsibility programme. We have selected several outreach programmes in Alexandra Township as our charities of choice for 2011:
Banakekeleni Haven and Abangani E Nkosini Centre
Children have a right to basic necessities such as clothing, food and blankets. Unfortunately for too many South African children, these items are a luxury that they may never receive.
This is not so for the children of Banakekeleni Haven and Abangani E Nkosini – two Johannesburg care centres to which Sandton City has committed our support for 2011. Due to financial constraints at these two havens, provision of all basic items has not always been possible. However, we have pledged to put together different monthly essential packs for each child, ensuring that they too can experience human dignity and have access to basic necessities. The hard working caretakers are also acknowledged and will each receive a pack to reward them for the special work that they do.
Banakekeleni, meaning ‘take care of them’, is a hospice and AIDS orphanage which provides care for infected and affected children and adults.
Abangani E Nkosini is a centre of care for orphaned and vulnerable children, the sick and the elderly.
Located in Alexander township in Johannesburg, both of these organisaitons provide social support and drive rejuvenation into the community.
Charity gift-wrapping service
Sandton City provides a charity gift-wrapping service in which Reach For A Dream volunteers wrap gifts with beautiful paper and glitzy ribbon, and all proceeds are donated to the Reach For A Dream Foundation.
Reach For A Dream collection tins have been distributed to all tenants to collect funds on an on-going basis.
List of charities: Gateway, National Sea Rescue, Stroke Aid, Candlelight Club, Council for the Blind, Woodside Sanctuary, St. John, Animals in Distress, Cresset House, Epilepsy SA, Sunshine Centre, Sandton SPCA, The Monday Club, The 34 Club, Red Cross, Cotlands, Physically Disabled SA, Guide Dogs Association of SA.
Although Sandton City has only selected a few charities, this ensures that we are able to make a significant change in those lives, rather than choosing many charities and only being able to make a small contribution.
With a strong focus on social responsibility and making a difference in our local community, Sandton City is committed to these charities. By channeling these efforts, Sandton City is helping thousands of children and families to achieve their dreams and enhance their quality of life.
